ABOUT SWINE FLU:
Swine flu is a contagious respiratory disease. It is caused by a type-A influenza virus. The Swine Flu is a combination of four known strains including Avian flu, Human Influenza and two other viruses.
SYMPTOMS OF SWINE FLU:
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, runny nose, headache, lethargy, lack of appetite, and fever over 101, chills and fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu.
PREVENTIONS FROM SWINE FLU:
-
Always cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, avoid touching your face, nose or mouth too frequently with your hands since swine flu appears to be transmitted through respiratory droplets in the same fashion as the common cold.
- Always wash your hands frequently with soap and water .
- Though alcohol based hand sanitizers don't routinely kill viruses they probably do offer some limited protection in preventing swine flu infections.
- If swine flu infections have been medically confirmed in your area consider avoiding large public gatherings. Individuals can be contagious with the swine flu virus for several day before demonstrating any signs or symptoms of infection. Be particularly careful about indoor gatherings where air circulates poorly.
- You should wear a respiratory mask. This barrier method does offer some basic protection against infection though not all masks are created equally. Higher quality masks capable of filtering out some respiratory infections are more expensive.
- If you start feeling ill with cold or flu-like symptoms do not go to work. Stay home and begin the usual home remedies for colds and flu. Contact your health care provider, local health department or hospital emergency room if your symptoms worsen or fail to improve for information about where to go to be screened for possible swine flu infection.

The Better Kolkata Contest organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries is an event which aims at the social, economic and environmental betterment of the cityu. This year the topic was ‘Eco-solutions for sustainable development’. Each school took up a project to improve a certain area.
Under the supervision of Tripti Maa’m, Munmun Maa’m, and Basabi Maa’m, we, the students of classes eight and nine tried to generate environmental awareness in a nearby village called Hosseinpur. We started by teaching the children and women of the village to make paper packets (‘thongas’). The packets were made from old newspapers provided by our school. The sale of these thongas provided them with an alternative source of income and also reduced the use of plastic packets. We cleaned and greened the bank of the canal near our school by picking up the litter and planting more trees. We also provided the nearby tea stalls coloured bins so that they could segregate the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. We also taught the villagers to make bio-scrubbers from coconut husks, which are more durable, eco-friendly and less expensive than plastic scrubbers and also bio-fuel from cow dung and hay, which reduced the use of kerosene in the village.
Under the guidance of Madhumita Maa’m we started making compost from the waste generated in our school canteen.
It was an enriching experience. We also enjoyed the first -time experience of riding back to school in a cycle van. Though we could not win the first prize, we bagged the ‘Best project report’ prize and our work was well - appreciated. We felt proud that we could do something for our city’s well-being!
